The Michigan Bureau of State Lottery faced many challenging issues that called for an investigation into the legacy system migration to a new, alternative hardware platform. The existing Unisys proprietary mainframe architecture provided the Lottery few choices for hardware and software and operations. The Lottery sought an open solution for running its mission-critical applications that would be more cost effective. The Lottery also desired an architecture that was compatible with a new system implemented in running the GTECH On-Line Gaming System. During the project, Idea Legacy provided training and mentoring in the use of the conversion and development tools for the new platform; database and data conversion; program conversion, testing assistance, and project management expertise.
ASCE’s previous computing environment was based on a Unisys A-12 mainframe with applications written in LINC and COBOL. The proprietary features of this architecture kept operating costs high and complicated the Society’s effortS to serve its membership. These challenges led ASCE to seek an open-systems platform. One of the most significant questions ASCE faced after this decision was how to migrate mission-critical applications such as PROMAPS.
New and emerging technologies are creating opportunities to further drive the corporate directive and improve quality and speed to delivery of their products. The current legacy system was heavily customized to meet the needs of the business, but was difficult to maintain, with many technical limitations due to its age. Client was nearing the end of a licensing period and was also beginning to exceed the processing capabilities of its legacy mainframe. Client desired to move off the mainframe platform to an Open System, to address the capacity issues as well as the technical limitations. The challenge was to mitigate cost and business risks, and migrate to a new platform capable of providing the functionality to improve quality and delivery.
